Why Carb Timing Changes Everything
Carbohydrates are not inherently disruptive.
What matters is when glucose enters the bloodstream relative to the body’s capacity to use it.
After resistance training, muscle tissue is metabolically altered. Contracting muscle increases GLUT4 transporter expression and translocation to the cell surface, allowing glucose to enter muscle cells with less reliance on insulin. At the same time, muscle glycogen has been depleted, creating immediate storage demand.
In this state:
Muscles actively pull glucose out of circulation
Lower insulin levels are required to achieve clearance
Glucose is directed toward glycogen restoration rather than prolonged circulation
When carbohydrates arrive without this context—when muscle demand is low and storage capacity is limited insulin must remain elevated longer to manage the same glucose load. The result isn’t immediate damage, but extended exposure of tissues to glucose and insulin.
This difference in exposure time matters.
Short, purposeful insulin rises followed by rapid clearance are fundamentally different from low-grade, persistent elevation. The former supports performance and recovery. The latter increases the likelihood of fat retention, oxidative stress, and vascular strain over time.
Carb timing doesn’t change the carbohydrate.
It changes where the glucose goes and how long it stays there.
This isn’t dieting.
It’s logistics.
