Why Your Blood Sugar Can Rise During Exercise (And Why That's Not Always Bad)

A blood sugar spike during exercise isn't evidence that exercise isn't working. It's evidence that your body is practicing a skill.

If your blood sugar goes up during a workout, your first instinct might be to think something went wrong.

It didn't.

So why does blood sugar rise during exercise in the first place?

During exercise, especially resistance training and higher-intensity activity, your body releases hormones like adrenaline. One of adrenaline's jobs is to tell your liver to release stored glucose into your bloodstream so your muscles have immediate access to energy.

Think of it as opening your body's fuel tank.

If you're insulin sensitive, your muscles quickly use that glucose.

If you're insulin resistant, your liver may release glucose normally, but your muscles are slower to pull it out of the bloodstream. As a result, your blood sugar may stay elevated longer after your workout.

That doesn't mean exercise failed.

It means your body is still learning.

And like every other skill, the way your body gets better is through repetition.

The answer isn't to work out less.

The answer is to work out more.

Because every workout is another opportunity to teach your body how to use blood sugar more efficiently.

Don't judge your progress by one blood sugar reading.

Judge it by how your body adapts over time.
